The short answer is: No torrents in and of themselves are not illegal (despite all the bullshit the RIAA and MPAA keep shoveling at everyone). Some of the content that users distribute via torrents are pirated, some of it isn’t.
But we don’t outlaw cars because drug smugglers use cars. We don’t sidewalks because criminals use sidewalks. We don’t outlaw breathing because criminals need to breath. Why is the government trying to outlaw torrents?
